VOA Tracks the Severity of Hunger Across Africa

VOA’s Africa Division produced a web special report on “Hunger Across Africa” which is being termed the world’s largest humanitarian crisis in 70 years.  The online report includes original multimedia in English, Somali, and Swahili.  It presents the breadth of challenges from deaths in Somaliland to dry riverbeds in Democratic Republic of Congo.  It also examines the many factors influencing food shortages including armed conflict, disease, humanitarian relief efforts, drought, and climate change.  On the ground coverage is provided from Somalia where terrorist attacks by al-Shabaab undermine food security, and from Chad and Niger where cross-border attacks by Boko Haram displace vulnerable civilians. Congressman Chris Smith told a House hearing on starvation in East Africa that “foreign aid isn’t popular in America, in large part, because the consequences of that are not widely reported.”
